Indian Companies Expand Influence in the UK with Major Acquisitions
In a significant move reflecting the growing influence of Indian companies in global markets, Bharti Enterprises has finalized a USD 4 billion deal to acquire a 24.5% stake in BT Group, Britain’s leading broadband and mobile provider. This deal marks the latest in a series of high-profile acquisitions by Indian firms in the UK, a trend that began at the turn of the millennium. The acquisition underscores the increasing ambition of Indian corporations to broaden their international footprint.
The trend of Indian companies investing in the UK was pioneered by Tata Group, which made headlines in February 2000 with its acquisition of Tetley, the UK’s most popular tea brand, for £271 million. This was followed by Tata Steel’s successful acquisition of Anglo-Dutch steelmaker Corus Group in 2007 for USD 12 billion, and Tata Motors’ purchase of Jaguar Land Rover from Ford in 2008 for USD 2.3 billion. These landmark deals not only elevated Tata Group’s global status but also inspired other Indian conglomerates to pursue international ventures.
In recent years, other notable acquisitions include Welspun India’s purchase of Christy, a leading terry towel brand, Mahindra & Mahindra’s acquisition of the BSA motorcycle brand, and TVS Motor Company’s purchase of Norton Motorcycles. These acquisitions highlight the strategic expansion of Indian companies into the UK market, reflecting their growing global presence and influence.
