Jaishankar Urges Bangladesh to Protect Minorities Amid Rising Communal Violence
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar expressed concern over the safety of minorities in Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for the ruling government to ensure their protection. Addressing the Lok Sabha during the Question Hour on Friday, he highlighted reports of escalating attacks on Hindus in the neighboring country. These remarks follow a troubling incident where a 17-year-old Hindu girl and a Bangladeshi student illegally entered India, fleeing persecution for being ISKCON devotees.
Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, acknowledged 88 cases of communal violence against minorities, primarily Hindus, since the ousting of Sheikh Hasina in August. Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam reported that 70 individuals have been arrested in connection with these incidents. India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had earlier raised concerns about the attacks during discussions with Bangladeshi officials, underlining the importance of minority safety for bilateral relations.
On India’s broader foreign policy, Jaishankar reiterated that Pakistan must demonstrate a commitment to eliminating terrorism for improved relations with India. Highlighting the success of India’s Neighbourhood First Policy, he pointed to significant trade, development projects, and diplomatic exchanges with most neighboring countries, excluding Pakistan and China.
