Virat Kohli Penalized for On-Field Altercation with Australian Debutant Sam Konstas
Indian cricket star Virat Kohli has been fined 20% of his match fee and handed one demerit point following a fiery altercation with Australia’s 19-year-old debutant Sam Konstas during the opening morning of the fourth Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). The incident occurred after a shoulder-to-shoulder collision between Kohli and Konstas, stemming from the latter’s aggressive stroke play, visibly frustrating the Indian captain. Match Referee Andy Pycroft imposed the penalty under Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for inappropriate physical contact, with Kohli accepting the sanction without a formal hearing.
The tense moment unfolded during the 10th over, as Konstas’ fearless batting — a blistering 60 off 65 balls featuring reverse scoops and powerful drives — unsettled Indian bowlers and drew praise from commentators. Kohli, however, appeared frustrated with the young debutant’s audacity, culminating in the brief physical clash. The situation was quickly defused by Australian opener Usman Khawaja, who intervened by calming both players with a friendly gesture, preventing the altercation from escalating further.
Australia ended Day 1 in a dominant position, powered by Konstas’ heroics and strong contributions from Usman Khawaja (57), Marnus Labuschagne (72), and Steve Smith (68*), reaching 311/6 by stumps. Jasprit Bumrah spearheaded India’s fightback with three wickets, while Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar, and Akash Deep chipped in with a wicket each. With a challenging pitch expected on Day 2, India’s batters will need to step up against a confident Australian bowling unit.
