Amazon Scraps Plans for Commercial Drone Deliveries in Italy After Strategic Review

Amazon has announced that it will no longer pursue its commercial drone delivery program in Italy, citing broader business regulatory challenges despite progress with aviation authorities. The company said the decision followed a strategic review of the project, which had been advancing in partnership with Italian aerospace regulators.

The move came as a surprise to Italy’s civil aviation authority ENAC, which described the decision as “unexpected” and linked it to recent financial developments within the company. ENAC noted that Amazon had previously celebrated the successful completion of initial drone delivery tests in December 2024 in San Salvo, a town in the Abruzzo region.

In a statement to Reuters, Amazon reaffirmed its appreciation for the cooperation of Italian regulators but said the wider business framework in the country does not currently align with its long-term goals for the program. The company did not indicate whether the decision might impact its drone delivery initiatives in other markets.
