Attack on Enforcement Directorate Officials in West Bengal Sparks Political Furor

West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose strongly condemned the attack on Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials by supporters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sheikh Sajahan in North 24 Parganas district. The incident occurred during a raid conducted by the agency in 15 places across Bengal, including Sajahan’s residence.

Governor Ananda Bose denounced the violence as “alarming, deplorable, and ghastly,” emphasizing that Bengal is not a “banana republic” and urged the government to halt “barbarism and vandalism” in a democracy. Warning of constitutional action if the government fails in its duties, he stressed the need for an end to pre-election violence.

The ED officials were assaulted by a mob of TMC supporters during the raid on Sajahan’s house, resulting in the vandalism of their vehicles. The officers, forced to seek safety, abandoned their damaged vehicles and resorted to autorickshaws and two-wheelers. Two officers sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital for treatment.

While TMC leader Shashi Panja refuted support for any violence, alleging provocation by central forces accompanying the investigative agencies, the West Bengal BJP has demanded an NIA probe into the attack. This incident has sparked political tension, with the BJP calling on Union Home Minister Amit Shah for further investigation.
