Bail pleas of 8 accused in Jahangirpuri riots rejected

Delhi Rohini court has rejected the bail pleas of eight accused in the Jahangirpuri riots. The court rejected the application stating that the accused could not be granted bail as they had criminal background. The court also observed that the police had failed to prevent the clash. The rally, which was held without permission, was not stopped by the police. The court also criticized the police for accompanying the rally instead.

The demolition of Jahangirpuri in Delhi came after clashes during Hanuman Jayanti. Officials of the North Delhi Municipal Corporation arrived with bulldozers on the morning of the 20th to demolish the illegal buildings. The bulldozers came shortly after Delhi BJP president Adesh Gupta wrote a letter to the NDMC mayor asking him to demolish the illegal buildings of the ‘rebels’. About 400 policemen were deployed at the spot and the demolition was carried out under heavy security. Fourteen buildings were bulldozed and demolished.

Meanwhile, a petition was filed in the Supreme Court against the demolition. Lawyers told the court that demolition work on the site was in progress and needed immediate action. With this, the Supreme Court ordered that the demolition process be suspended and the status quo at the site be maintained. The BJP rules the North Delhi Municipal Corporation. NDMC mayor Raja Iqbal Singh said the move was a normal one and had no other motive in demolishing the illegal buildings.
