Bengaluru Software Engineer Loses Rs 1 Crore in FedEx Scam

In a sophisticated cyber fraud operation, a 40-year-old software engineer from Bengaluru lost Rs 1 crore in two days. The victim, residing in NRI Layout near Ramamurthynagar, received a call on May 16 from someone posing as a FedEx logistics executive, claiming a parcel sent in her name contained narcotics. Following this, a man posing as a Customs officer informed her of a case under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against her, escalating her panic.

The fraudsters then coerced her into a “digital arrest,” demanding she join a Skype call, where they simulated a formal police interrogation and instructed her to transfer money for “verification.” Over two days, they manipulated her into transferring Rs 1 crore across several transactions, falsely assuring her that her funds would be returned post-verification. When she realized she had been deceived, she reported the incident to the police, who have since launched an investigation.

FedEx, responding to the incident, reiterated that it never solicits personal information via unsolicited communications. They advised individuals to refrain from sharing personal details with suspicious callers and to report such incidents to local law enforcement or the cybercrime department. This case highlights a growing trend of cyber fraud, emphasizing the need for vigilance and prompt reporting of suspicious activities.
