Pune Porsche Crash: Teenager to Face Charges for Drunk Driving

A juvenile court in Pune has ruled that the 17-year-old who ran over two techies while driving a Porsche will be tried for drunk driving under section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. The act criminalizes driving with a blood alcohol concentration above 30 mg per 100 ml. For a first offense, the penalty can include up to six months in jail and a ₹10,000 fine. A second offense could result in up to two years in jail and a ₹15,000 fine, along with potential driving license penalties.

The tragic incident occurred around 3.15 am on Sunday near Kalyani Nagar, where the teenager’s Porsche collided with a motorcycle, killing Anis Awadhiya and Ashwini Costa. The accident has led to national outrage, especially after the teenager was granted bail within 15 hours on conditions seen as lenient, including writing a 300-word essay on accidents and working with traffic police for 15 days. The court also mandated counseling for his drinking habit.

The teenager, who was celebrating his Class 12 results with friends before the crash, is the son of a prominent Pune builder. Pune Police Chief confirmed that the teenager knew his actions could result in death, and charges under the Indian Penal Code will be applied. Blood samples have been sent for a forensic report following a medical test conducted shortly after the incident.
