Bharti Airtel Denies Data Breach Allegations, Claims Attack on Brand Reputation

Telecom giant Bharti Airtel has firmly denied allegations of a major data breach affecting its customers, following reports suggesting that the personal information of 375 million users was for sale on the dark web. Airtel labeled these claims as a “desperate attempt” to tarnish its reputation and asserted that there is no evidence of any such breach. An Airtel spokesperson told Moneycontrol, “We have done a thorough investigation and can confirm that there has been no breach whatsoever from Airtel systems.”

Rahul Sasi, CEO of cybersecurity firm CloudSEK, supported Airtel’s stance by stating that the actor behind the alleged leak “has gathered previously leaked data and is falsely claiming it to be a recent breach of Airtel’s database.” Sasi highlighted the trend of threat actors aggregating publicly available information and falsely attributing it to telecom databases, emphasizing that compiling a database of first names, last names, and phone numbers using publicly available datasets is relatively easy.

Despite the serious nature of these allegations, Airtel remains confident in the security of its systems and insists that its customer data is safe. The telecom company has dismissed the reports as an attempt by vested interests to damage its brand, reaffirming its commitment to protecting customer information.
