BJP protest did not bear success; Jharkhand enacts legislation to curb mob violence

Jharkhand enacts legislation to curb mob attack. On December 21, the Jharkhand Assembly passed the Prevention of Mob Violence and Mob Lynching Bill, 2021. The bill was passed amid protests by the opposition BJP. Jharkhand is the third state after Rajasthan and West Bengal to enact legislation to curb genocide.

According to Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, the bill was introduced to bring peace, unity and brotherhood to the state. The Chief Minister’s response came after the bill was passed in the state assembly. The law has been brought in for the strong protection of the people and the protection of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution. The bill was introduced by Jharkhand Minister Alamgir Alam. The bill sees mob violence and mass murder as punishable by up to three years in prison and a fine of up to Rs 25 lakh.

Under the new law, a person can be injured or killed in a mob attack. The law also guarantees financial assistance to the relatives of those injured or killed. The Penal Code also guarantees those involved in conspiracies that lead to mob violence. Those who intimidate victims, their families, or those who help them are also punishable under this law.

The bill was passed amid strong protests from the opposition BJP. The BJP wanted the bill to be left to the select committee. BJP leader CP Singh had protested that the government was legislating for the good of minorities. The BJP’s demand for several amendments to the bill was rejected in a voice vote.
