Calcutta High Court Slams West Bengal Government Over Vandalism at RG Kar Medical College
The Calcutta High Court on Friday criticized the West Bengal government for its failure to prevent the vandalism that occurred at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on the night of August 14. The incident took place during a protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor. The Chief Justice, reacting to emails the court received regarding the vandalism, questioned the effectiveness of the police force present at the scene, stating, “How will these doctors work fearlessly?”
The vandalism, which saw around 40 individuals entering the hospital premises, involved the destruction of the Emergency Ward, nursing station, medicine store, and a section of the Out Patients Department (OPD). The miscreants, armed with sticks, bricks, and rods, also overturned a police vehicle and damaged several two-wheelers. The Chief Justice expressed concern over the situation, remarking that such a large group could not have gathered unnoticed and suggesting that the area should have been cordoned off.
In response to the incident, the Calcutta High Court has transferred the investigation of the trainee doctor’s death from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The court’s decision underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for a thorough investigation into the tragic event that sparked the protest.
