Canada-Based Gangster Designated as Terrorist by Indian Home Ministry

In a significant development, the Indian Home Ministry has designated Lakhbir Singh Landa, a 33-year-old gangster based in Canada, as a terrorist under the stringent anti-terror law UAPA. Hailing from Punjab’s Tarn Taran district, Landa is identified as a member of the notorious Khalistani group, Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). His involvement in various terrorist activities, notably the rocket attack on the Punjab Police Intelligence Headquarters in Mohali in 2021, has prompted this designation. Landa, who fled to Canada in 2017, is known to have strong connections with Harvinder Singh, also known as Rinda, a gangster based in Pakistan, who has collaborated with BKI.

The Home Ministry’s notification outlines Landa’s extensive involvement in criminal cases spanning the formation of terror modules, extortion, killings, and the supply of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs), arms, sophisticated weapons, and narcotics. He is alleged to have facilitated the transportation of these illicit items across the border, aiding various modules engaged in terrorist activities not only in Punjab but also in other regions of the country. Additionally, Landa’s close affiliations with prominent Khalistani terrorists in Canada, such as Gurpatwant Singh Pannun of Sikhs for Justice and the late Hardeep Singh Nijjar of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), further underscore his ties within this extremist network.

This designation by the Indian Home Ministry highlights the gravity of Lakhbir Singh Landa’s involvement in perpetrating acts of terror, signaling a decisive step in addressing transnational terrorism and disrupting the networks facilitating such activities.
