Congress Accuses Government of Sabotaging Education Due to Textbook Delays

The Congress party has criticized the Union government, alleging that the Education Ministry is “sabotaging” children’s education following delays in printing Class 6 textbooks. Congress leader Jairam Ramesh pointed out that the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has failed to publish new textbooks for Science, Mathematics, and Social Sciences, despite the school year already starting. He stated that either “the rot runs deep” or “the incompetence scales new heights every day.”

Ramesh also mentioned that the syllabus and textbooks have not yet been finalized by the National Syllabus and Teaching Learning Material Committee (NSTC), and it will take another 10 to 15 days to print them. According to him, officials expect a two-month delay before the books are available to students. This issue has caused significant disruptions, with only English and Hindi textbooks currently available for Class 6, while Class 3 textbooks have been released on time.

In response, a senior Ministry of Education official stated that new and engaging textbooks for Classes 3 and 6 are in the final phase of development, with nine textbooks already available and the remaining eight to be released soon. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan recently reviewed the development of school textbooks by the New Curriculum Framework (NCF) to address these concerns.
