Congress MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary Suspended Amid Party Infighting in Jalandhar

In a significant development in Punjab politics, Congress MLA Vikramjit Singh Chaudhary has been suspended from the party and all associated responsibilities. This action comes after Chaudhary publicly criticized former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who is the party’s candidate for the upcoming Lok Sabha election from Jalandhar. Devender Yadav, Punjab in-charge and a member of the Congress Working Committee, cited Chaudhary’s “unrestrained statements” that deviated from party guidelines as the reason for the suspension.

Chaudhary’s discontent stems from the party’s decision to nominate Channi over his family, particularly after his mother, Karamjit Kaur, joined the BJP following her unsuccessful bid in the 2023 bye-election. He has openly accused Channi of moral corruption and misconduct, exacerbating tensions within the party. Chaudhary also launched a campaign across Jalandhar, highlighting what he claims are Channi’s misdemeanors, and questioning the integrity of Congress leaders supporting him.

The discord highlights a deep rift within the Congress as the Lok Sabha elections approach, with Chaudhary vowing to continue raising his concerns about Channi’s suitability. He criticized the party’s leadership and decision-making, suggesting that tickets are being distributed to former rivals rather than loyal party members. Chaudhary’s suspension underscores ongoing challenges within the Congress party as it prepares for crucial electoral contests.
