Cyber Fraud Network Busted in Bengaluru, Six Arrested
Bengaluru’s cyber crime unit has dismantled an interstate cyber fraud network, resulting in the arrest of six individuals involved in a sophisticated scheme. The apprehended included five from Kerala and one from Karnataka. This group specialized in targeting vulnerable individuals, particularly those in low-income service sectors, enticing them with financial rewards in exchange for their KYC documents.
Police Commissioner B Dayananda revealed that the network’s modus operandi involved setting up benami accounts, also known as mule accounts, using the victims’ names in various banks. These accounts served as conduits for fraudulent funds obtained through deceiving innocent individuals. Remarkably, one of the accused even traveled to Dubai to acquire training in financial crime techniques, adding a global dimension to their illicit operations.
The investigation unearthed a startling 126 bank accounts registered under the names of unwitting victims, facilitating the transfer of ill-gotten gains from 75 cyber fraud cases across India, with 20 linked directly to Bengaluru. Cases involving the misuse of Aadhaar cards topped the list, tallying over 116 instances, followed by FedEx courier fraud, online job scams, and sextortion.
