Delhi Court Denies Arvind Kejriwal Interim Bail on Medical Grounds

In a recent ruling, a Delhi court denied interim bail to Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on medical grounds in connection with a money laundering case linked to the alleged excise policy scam. Special Judge Kaveri Baweja cited Kejriwal’s extensive campaigning as evidence that he does not appear to be suffering from any serious or life-threatening ailment. The court extended Kejriwal’s judicial custody until June 19 and directed the Tihar jail authorities to address his medical needs while in custody.

The court also ordered reviving the Medical Board of AIIMS to examine Kejriwal and prescribe necessary diagnostic tests within three days. The judge emphasized that the applicant’s health concerns could be managed while in custody and that there was no valid ground for granting interim bail solely for diagnostic purposes. Kejriwal had campaigned in multiple states during the Lok Sabha elections, which the Enforcement Directorate used to argue against his bail application.

Kejriwal surrendered to Tihar jail on Sunday after his interim bail expired on June 1. Despite his counsel arguing that campaign stress had exacerbated his health issues, the court found no reason why necessary medical tests and treatments couldn’t be conducted while he remained in custody. The court is set to consider Kejriwal’s application for default bail on June 7 and has asked for the Enforcement Directorate’s response on his regular bail plea by that date.
