Delhi Government Orders Sealing of Unused Borewells After Fatal Incident

In a swift response to the tragic death of an unidentified man who fell into an abandoned borewell in Keshopur, west Delhi, the Delhi government has issued orders to seal all unused public and private borewells within 48 hours. The Delhi Jal Board (DJB) Chief Secretary Naresh Kumar and the water utility were directed to take immediate action following the incident, with a detailed inquiry into the matter also demanded. The unfortunate event has prompted concerns over safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent such accidents.

The recovery operation, which lasted for 14 hours, was led by the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), in collaboration with local police and fire brigade teams. The borewell, located inside a locked room, suggested a potential breach of security, prompting investigations by the police and DJB. Water minister Atishi Singh emphasized the urgency of sealing off closed borewells to avoid future tragedies and assured that a comprehensive report would be submitted.

Amidst the outcry, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has criticized the DJB for alleged negligence, referencing a similar incident in February that resulted in a fatality. The BJP has called for significant compensation for the victims’ families. This incident has brought to light the critical need for proactive safety measures and stringent enforcement to safeguard the community from preventable hazards.
