BJP MP’s Call for Constitutional Amendments Sparks Controversy, Party Distances Itself

In a recent statement that stirred controversy, BJP MP Anantkumar Hegde from Karnataka suggested that the party would aim to amend the Constitution to undo what he termed as “anti-Hindu” changes made by the Congress. Speaking at an event in Uttara Kannada district, Hegde highlighted the need for a two-thirds majority in the Rajya Sabha and control of over 20 states to facilitate such amendments, particularly targeting laws he believes subjugate the Hindu community. These comments have led the BJP to distance itself, emphasizing that Hegde’s opinions are his own and not reflective of the party’s stance.

The BJP leadership, represented by spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia, reiterated the party’s commitment to the Constitution and the country’s welfare, asserting that Hegde’s remarks were personal and not aligned with the BJP’s principles. The party has also sought clarification from Hegde regarding his controversial statement. On social media, the Karnataka BJP underlined its dedication to upholding the Constitution, indicating a clear attempt to dissociate from Hegde’s provocative comments.

The Congress party, seizing the opportunity to criticize the BJP and Hegde, condemned the statements as revealing the “hidden intentions” of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the broader Sangh Parivar. Senior Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, accused the BJP of aiming to erode democratic values and impose a dictatorship aligned with a “Manuwadi” mindset, threatening the secular and diverse fabric of India. The controversy has ignited a significant debate on the preservation of constitutional values and the political landscape in India.
