Delhi Government to Regulate Coaching Centres Following Student Deaths
In a significant move, the Delhi government plans to introduce a bill to regulate coaching centres in the capital, ensuring minimum infrastructure standards, qualified teachers, and regulated fees. This announcement by Education Minister Atishi comes just days after the tragic death of three students in the basement of Rau’s IAS Study Circle due to flooding. The incident has sparked widespread protests and highlighted the urgent need for regulation.
Minister Atishi emphasized that the proposed legislation will be modeled after existing regulations for private schools, hospitals, and nursing homes. “The law will regulate all coaching centres in Delhi as part of a long-term solution,” she stated. “Fees will be regulated, and misleading advertisements will be stopped.” Regular inspections of coaching centres will also be mandated under this new law.
The government has invited students from coaching centres for a consultation at the secretariat, recognizing that they are most aware of the issues. A committee, including students and Delhi government officers, will be formed to draft the law. Feedback is being solicited from the public through an email address, coaching.law.feedback@gmail.com. The move aims to ensure that the regulations meet the needs and safety requirements of the students.
