Delhi High Court Grants Divorce to Chef Kunal Kapur Citing Wife’s Cruelty

In a significant ruling on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court granted renowned chef Kunal Kapur a divorce from his estranged wife, Ekta, on the grounds of cruelty. The case, which drew considerable attention, highlighted allegations by Kapur, a popular judge on the cooking show MasterChef India, of being subjected to disrespect and public humiliation by Ekta. The court’s decision comes after Kapur detailed instances of his wife’s alleged lack of respect towards his parents and her behavior that he described as lacking in dignity and empathy.

Countering Kapur’s accusations, Ekta claimed that her husband’s allegations were fabricated attempts to mislead the court. She asserted her efforts to maintain a loving and loyal relationship, dismissing any claims of disrespect or mistreatment. However, the court, led by Justices Suresh Kumar Kait and Neena Bansal Krishna, noted the absence of dignity and empathy in Ekta’s conduct towards Kapur, stating that such behavior disgraces the essence of marriage and justifies the decision to grant divorce.

The ruling underscored the importance of substantiating allegations in marital disputes, with the court observing that Ekta’s unfounded claims against Kapur aimed to tarnish his reputation. By acknowledging Kapur’s professional success and dedication, the court cast doubt on the credibility of Ekta’s allegations, concluding that they constituted cruelty and had a detrimental impact on Kapur’s reputation. This landmark decision by the Delhi High Court marks the end of the marriage between Kunal Kapur and Ekta, who have been married since 2008 and share a son, Ranbir, born in 2012.
