Eminent Jurist Fali S. Nariman Passes Away at 95

Renowned jurist and senior advocate Fali S. Nariman, celebrated for his monumental contributions to Indian law and judiciary, passed away on Wednesday morning at the age of 95. Born in Rangoon, British India, on January 10, 1929, Nariman had been battling multiple health issues, including cardiac complications. A recipient of the Padma Vibhushan, Nariman was often hailed as the “Bhishma Pitaamah” (father figure) of the Indian judiciary, instrumental in shaping landmark judgments that have significantly influenced the Supreme Court’s jurisprudence.

Nariman’s illustrious career spanned over seven decades, during which he played pivotal roles in several key Constitution bench cases. Notably, he was involved in the Golak Nath case, advocating for the judiciary’s power to review constitutional amendments, and the TMA Pai and SP Gupta cases, which respectively addressed the rights of minorities in establishing educational institutions and the independence of the judiciary in judicial appointments.
