Heavy Rainfall Causes Floods in Assam, Displacing Thousands

Early monsoon rains have caused severe flooding across Assam, displacing approximately 1.6 lakh people in 15 districts. Karimganj has been the hardest hit, with 1,52,133 residents displaced and 5,114 taking refuge in relief camps. The other affected districts include Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Hojai, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Tamulpur, Udalguri, Darrang, Dhemaji, Hailakandi, Goalpara, Nagaon, Chirang, and Kokrajhar.

On June 18, Assam experienced a staggering 154% increase in rainfall, creating flood-like conditions. Between June 1 and 17, the state received 280.2 mm of rainfall, 17% higher than the normal 238.9 mm. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported particularly high rainfall in Nalbari (89% above normal), Kokrajhar (81%), Dhubri (72%), Barpeta (71%), and Hailakandi (62%). On June 18 alone, Dima Hasao received 1050% additional rainfall, followed by Karimganj (466%), Baksa (347%), Dhubri (276%), and Hailakandi (263%).

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) has confirmed that 26 people have died since May 28 due to the floods. In addition to the rural areas, urban centers like Silchar town and parts of Guwahati city are facing significant waterlogging issues, impacting daily life for residents. The authorities are actively managing the crisis and providing relief to the affected populations.
