Home Guard’s On-Duty Dance in Mumbai Local Triggers Controversy and Prompt Action

A Mumbai home guard, identified as SF Gupta, found himself at the center of a social media storm after a video emerged showcasing him engaged in an impromptu dance session inside a second-class ladies coach of a Central Railway local train. The incident occurred on the evening of December 6, between 10:00 p.m. and 10:15 p.m., during Gupta’s duty to ensure women’s safety during nighttime travel. The viral video depicted Gupta initially providing instructions to a young lady filming a dance reel before joining her in an impulsive dance to the rhythm of the music.

Following the swift circulation of the video online, the Divisional Railway Manager’s official account promptly tagged the Railway Protection Force (RPF) to take immediate action against the home guard. The Government Railway Police (GRP) filed a formal report against Gupta on December 8, highlighting the need to prevent similar incidents. Railway authorities reinforced directives prohibiting personnel from taking photos, engaging in selfies, or participating in such activities while in uniform and on duty. Subsequently, Gupta was summoned to explain his actions, and the GRP Mumbai assured the public of appropriate measures taken against the concerned home guard to prevent future occurrences.

In response to the incident, the GRP Mumbai issued a statement: “On 6/12/2023, a video of a home guard dancing in uniform during local train patrolling is going viral. Taking serious notice of the said incident and verifying the truth, appropriate action has been taken against the concerned Home Guard. We are taking care to prevent such incidents from happening in the future.” The event underscores the significance of maintaining professionalism and adherence to regulations while on duty, particularly in roles responsible for public safety within the railway system.
