Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, claimed today that he had spoken to megastar Shah Rukh Khan and given him assurances regarding the demonstrations against his upcoming movie “Pathaan.” In response to “some incident” that happened at a theatre in the state, Mr. Sarma claimed that Mr. Khan called him early this morning.

Bollywood actor Shri @iamsrk called me and we talked today morning at 2 am. He expressed concern about an incident in Guwahati during screening of his film. I assured him that it’s duty of state govt to maintain law & order. We’ll enquire and ensure no such untoward incidents.

“Bollywood actor Shri @iamsrk called me and we talked today morning at 2 am. He expressed concern about an incident in Guwahati during screening of his film. I assured him that it’s duty of state govt to maintain law & order. We’ll enquire and ensure no such untoward incidents,” the Chief Minister said in a tweet.

His tweet comes a day after he curtly responded to reporters’ inquiries about the violent protests by right-wing activists against the film by asking who Mr. Khan is. “Shah Rukh Khan, who is he? I have no knowledge of him or the movie “Pathaan,” “Yesterday in Guwahati, Mr. Sarma stated.

When informed that Mr. Khan is a Bollywood superstar, he remarked that Assamese films should be the people of the state’s concern, not Bollywood. Additionally, Mr. Sarma had stated that Mr. Khan had not called him and that he would look into the situation if the actor so requested. In case any demonstrator broke the law, he also promised to take action.

His remarks were in response to questions over some activists tearing the movie’s posters at a Guwahati theatre that is set to screen the movie. The owner of the movie theatre claimed that Mr. Khan also called him.

The ‘Besharam Rang’ song from Mr. Khan’s ‘Pathaan,’ which is scheduled for release on January 25 and features his co-star Deepika Padukone wearing a saffron bikini, has sparked objections. A ban on the movie has been urged by a number of leaders, including those from the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad.
