India Faces Allegations of Spying in Australia and Unrest with Western Allies
Reports have emerged from Australian and US media sources alleging espionage activities by Indian intelligence officials. According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), two Indian spies were expelled from Australia after attempting to steal secrets related to defense projects, airport security, and trade relationships. The Sydney Morning Herald added that these officials were part of a broader network, referred to as a “nest of spies,” which also monitored Indian nationals in Australia and forged connections with politicians.
The Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) had previously hinted at foreign espionage activities in its 2021 threat assessment report. ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess described how foreign agents recruited Australians with access to sensitive defense technologies, although the country behind these operations was not explicitly named. Amid these allegations, Indian government officials have yet to issue a detailed response, particularly since the Australian government has not officially backed the claims reported by ABC.
The timing of these reports coincides with a heated election season in India, sparking concerns in New Delhi about potential interference by Western allies. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal criticized the reports as containing “unwarranted and unsubstantiated imputations.” Meanwhile, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong emphasized the importance of maintaining democratic resilience in response to foreign interference, underscoring the value of Australia’s multicultural democracy and legal frameworks designed to address such challenges.
