Google and Amazon Suspend Green Card Applications Amid Tech Layoffs

In a significant move reflecting the current economic pressures in the tech industry, both Google and Amazon have decided to halt the processing of US green card applications for their immigrant workers through the PERM system. The decision comes in the wake of massive layoffs in the sector, with Google dismissing 12,000 employees earlier this year and announcing a freeze on the PERM process until early 2025. Amazon also confirmed a similar suspension through 2024, attributing the pause to the complexities and current redundancies in the labor market, impacting the permanent labor certification process that predominantly aims to safeguard American workers’ interests.

According to Ava Benach, a leading immigration attorney, this trend among tech giants reflects a larger response to an oversupplied job market. The PERM process, designed to ensure that hiring foreign labor does not adversely affect American workers by testing the local labor market, becomes redundant when suitable local workers are available, especially after significant layoffs. This procedure also requires companies to notify previously laid-off employees about new openings, potentially leading to reemployment, thereby further reducing the need for foreign labor.

This development poses significant challenges for immigrant workers in the tech industry, who may now face delays and uncertainties in their plans to secure permanent residency in the United States. With these suspensions, the pathway to a green card is becoming increasingly complicated, signaling a tough period ahead for foreign nationals seeking long-term employment in the U.S. tech sector.
