India Largest “Connected” Nation, Over 800 Million Broadband Users: Centre

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the minister of state for electronics, information technology, and skill development and entrepreneurship, said that with more than 800 million broadband customers, India is currently the most “connected” country in the world. He made his comments on Sunday during the India Internet Governance Forum 2022’s closing ceremony. “Leveraging Techade for Empowering Bharat” was the event’s topic.

In his remarks, MoS Rajeev Chandrasekhar said: “We have 800 million Indian customers, making us the most “connected” country in the world. With 1.2 billion Indian customers, 5G and BharatNet’s greatest rural broadband access initiative would have the single-largest presence on the internet.”He added that we anticipate both new legal frameworks and technical advancements to continue to be essential. He continued, “The third leg of this Global Standard Cyber Law Framework, which we think will stimulate the Indian internet and economy, would be the deep involvement by all stakeholders.

Highlighting India’s tremendous powerful offering he noted,” India now has a tremendous powerful offering, identity authentication to a very diverse and rich suite of applications, and improved accessibility to the internet to countries in the Global South which have not been able to step up and create the same sort of pace of digitization of the economy is an internetization of their economies. He further said that during the G20 Presidency, the Prime Minister declared that he will be open to India offering that platform to all those nations in the Global South that want to transform their digital economy and their governance model as India.”

According to the MoS, it took a lot of work for the Indian internet to adopt a multistakeholder architecture.

Alkesh Kumar Sharma, Secretary of MeitY, said that the Digital India programme enhances India’s mission with digital literacy initiative skills and an exemplary indigenous success story that has become a global story with technological advancement forming new India. Mr. Sharma was speaking about the IIGF’s second edition.
