India, Malaysia Deepen Strategic Ties with New Trade and Tech Agreements
Narendra Modi and Anwar Ibrahim on Sunday reaffirmed their commitment to expanding bilateral trade and broadening cooperation in high-priority sectors such as semiconductors, defence and advanced technology. The renewed momentum came during Modi’s two-day visit to Malaysia — his first since both nations elevated ties to a comprehensive strategic partnership in August 2024 — signalling a stronger economic and geopolitical alignment between the two countries.
Speaking after talks in Putrajaya, Anwar said the partnership now spans trade and investment, food security, healthcare, tourism and defence, with both governments focused on swift and effective implementation. The leaders witnessed the exchange of 11 agreements covering key areas including semiconductor collaboration, disaster management and peacekeeping initiatives, reflecting a shared push to build resilient supply chains and deepen institutional cooperation.
Both sides also agreed to continue promoting local-currency settlement mechanisms to facilitate cross-border transactions and reduce dependence on third-party currencies. Expressing confidence in growing commercial ties, the leaders said bilateral trade is expected to surpass last year’s $18.6 billion. Anwar further confirmed Malaysia’s support for India’s proposal to open a consulate in Sabah state on Borneo island, a move aimed at strengthening diplomatic presence and boosting economic engagement in the region.
