India Probes Ride-Hailing Firms Ola and Uber Over Alleged Differential Pricing

The Indian government has issued notices to ride-hailing giants Ola and Uber regarding allegations of differential pricing based on smartphone operating systems. According to Consumer Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi, reports and user complaints on social media indicate that iPhone users are being charged higher fares for the same rides compared to Android users.
Minister Joshi has termed such practices as “unfair trade practices” and emphasized their disregard for consumer rights. He has also directed the Central Consumer Protection Agency (CCPA) to investigate similar pricing discrepancies across other industries, including food delivery and online ticketing platforms.
India remains a crucial market for Uber, where it competes with rivals such as Ola, Rapido, and BluSmart. Both Ola and Uber have yet to respond to the notices, which follow growing scrutiny over pricing strategies in the tech-driven service sector.
