Indian Dancer Amarnath Ghosh Shot Dead in Missouri Amid Surge in Attacks on Indian Nationals

In a tragic incident, Amarnath Ghosh, a talented Bharatnatyam and Kuchupudi dancer originally from Kolkata, was fatally shot in Missouri’s St. Louis Academy neighborhood on Tuesday evening. The Office of the Consulate General of India in Chicago expressed its deep condolences to Ghosh’s bereaved family and friends. It confirmed ongoing efforts to follow up on the forensic investigation with the local police and provide necessary support during this difficult time.

The unfortunate event has drawn attention to the increasing number of attacks against Indian and Indian-American students across various parts of the United States. Television actor Devoleena Bhattacharjee, a friend of Ghosh, revealed through a social media post that he was attacked while taking an evening walk. The details surrounding the motive and the perpetrator of the crime remain undisclosed. Efforts are being made by Ghosh’s friends in the U.S. to claim his body, but there has been no update on the situation thus far.

This surge in violence against individuals of Indian origin has prompted the U.S. administration to take decisive actions to prevent further incidents. The White House, through John Kirby of the National Security Council, emphasized the administration’s commitment to working closely with state and local authorities to thwart such attacks and ensure accountability. The case of Amarnath Ghosh has been strongly taken up with the St. Louis police and the University for a thorough investigation into the reprehensible gun attack.
