Indian Sprinter Dutee Chand Supports Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif Amidst Olympic Controversy

Indian sprinter Dutee Chand has voiced her support for Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, following a contentious match in the women’s 60kg category at the Paris Olympics. The controversy erupted when Italian pugilist Angela Carini abandoned her bout against Khelif just 46 seconds in, claiming that a punch from Khelif was “too painful” to continue. This abrupt end sparked a heated debate on social media, with some questioning the fairness of the contest and labeling Khelif as “biologically male” and a “transgender” athlete. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) defended its decision to allow both female boxers to compete, citing the aggression athletes face due to arbitrary decisions.

Dutee Chand, who has faced similar scrutiny in her career, condemned the controversy. In 2014, Chand successfully contested an IOC rule that barred athletes with naturally high testosterone levels from competing, arguing that such biological differences do not necessarily confer an unfair advantage. Reflecting on her own experiences, Chand stated, “I suffered a lot at that time. I faced a lot of controversy regarding my gender. It is not right to create controversy on social media about this.”

Chand emphasized that Olympic athletes undergo rigorous testing, implying that Khelif’s participation is valid and fair. She urged the public to focus on the athletes’ performances rather than perpetuating debates on gender and fairness. Khelif’s advancement to the quarterfinals, though overshadowed by the controversy, remains a significant achievement, highlighting the ongoing discussions around gender and sports.
