Jharkhand CM Hemant Soren Resurfaces Amid Political Turmoil and ED Investigation

In a dramatic turn of events, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who was declared “missing” by the BJP, made a public appearance in Ranchi today. This development follows over 24 hours during which Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials were unable to locate him. Soren, the leader of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), had last been seen in Delhi on Sunday night and was reportedly unreachable at his Delhi residences and Jharkhand Bhavan in the capital. His reappearance comes amidst intense political activities in both Ranchi and Delhi, with the ED having seized ₹ 36 lakh in cash and his BMW car during their search.

The BJP, alleging that the Chief Minister was evading the law, intensified the situation with State BJP chief Babulal Marandi releasing an advertisement that sought information about Mr. Soren’s whereabouts, offering a cash reward of ₹ 11,000 for credible information. On the other hand, the JMM maintained that they were in constant contact with Soren. The Congress, an ally of JMM, accused the BJP of conspiring to create a pretext for the imposition of President’s rule in the state. Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan commented on the situation, asserting the importance of the rule of law and stating that he was closely monitoring the developments.

Amidst these political maneuvers, all MLAs from the ruling coalition, which includes JMM, Congress, and RJD, have been instructed to remain in Ranchi, sparking further speculation about potential political shifts. BJP MP and Jharkhand leader Dr. Nishikant Dubey even alleged a plot to appoint Soren’s wife, Kalpana, as the new Chief Minister. Meanwhile, Hemant Soren faces an ongoing investigation by the ED in a case related to an alleged illegal land ownership change racket in Jharkhand, with 14 arrests made so far. The JMM has criticized the timing of the fresh summons issued to Soren, who had previously been interrogated on January 20, and condemned the ED’s approach, especially their arrival at Soren’s Delhi residence with armed personnel.
