Chhattisgarh High Court Issues Notice to Former CM Bhupesh Baghel Over Election Code Violation
The Chhattisgarh High Court has served a notice to former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel following a petition that challenges his recent election as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA). The petition alleges a violation of the model code of conduct during the assembly polls. Justice Parth Prateem Sahu, who issued the order on Monday, made the document available on Tuesday.
The petition against Baghel was filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament Vijay Baghel, who was defeated by Bhupesh Baghel in the Patan constituency during the assembly elections. According to the petitioner’s counsel TK Jha, Bhupesh Baghel is accused of breaching the Representation of Peoples Act, 1951. The alleged violation involves organizing a procession in the Patan constituency after the stipulated time of 5 pm on November 15.
The legal challenge seeks substantial consequences. The petitioner demands that Bhupesh Baghel’s election be declared null and void, and additionally, seeks to bar him from contesting in elections for a period of six years. The High Court has scheduled the next hearing of this high-profile case for February 26.
