Suspension of 11 Opposition MPs Revoked Ahead of Budget Session

In a recent development, the Rajya Sabha Privileges Committee has found 11 suspended opposition members of Parliament guilty of breach of privilege and contempt of the Council of States. However, in a surprising turn of events, Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar has revoked their suspension, allowing them to participate in the upcoming Budget session. This decision was made public just a day before the commencement of the session on Wednesday.

The committee, in its report to the Rajya Sabha chairman, stated that the period of suspension already served by the MPs should be considered as “sufficient punishment” for their transgressions. The MPs in question, including Jebi Mather Hisham, L Hanumanthaiah, Neeraj Dangi, and others, were initially suspended for their actions during the Winter session of Parliament.

Highlighting the significance of the upcoming session, the committee noted that the suspension revocation would enable the members to attend the special address by President Droupadi Murmu to both Houses of Parliament in the new building. The chairman exercised his authority under the rules of procedure to lift their suspension, acknowledging the importance of their participation in this pivotal event.
