Kharge Criticizes PM Modi’s Meditation at Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meditation at the Vivekananda Rock Memorial in Kanniyakumari, emphasizing that politics and religion should remain separate. Speaking at the AICC headquarters on May 30, 2024, Kharge remarked, “If you have faith in God, then do it at home,” stressing that combining religious sentiments with political activities is inappropriate and could alienate individuals of different faiths.
PM Modi is on a three-day spiritual retreat following his Lok Sabha election campaign, meditating at the Dhyan Mandapam, where Swami Vivekananda is believed to have had a divine vision of ‘Bharat Mata.’ Kharge also criticized the expenditure on security for the visit, calling it a “drama” and a misuse of resources that could harm the country. The BJP posted a video on social media showing Modi performing ‘Surya Arghya’ and offering prayers at the memorial.
As the election season continues, voting in the seventh phase will take place on June 1 in 57 Lok Sabha constituencies across seven states and a Union Territory, including Modi’s Varanasi. The polls will run from 7 am to 6 pm, with results to be counted on June 4. The political discourse remains heated, with Kharge’s comments adding to the ongoing debate about the intersection of faith and politics in India.
