Met Gala 2026 Unveils “Fashion Is Art” Theme, Beyoncé to Return After Decade

The Metropolitan Museum of Art has announced that the 2026 Met Gala will adopt the dress code “Fashion Is Art,” spotlighting the intricate relationship between artistic depictions of the human body and fashion as a living, wearable art form. The theme aligns with the Costume Institute’s upcoming spring exhibition, “Costume Art,” which will explore how clothing functions as both creative expression and cultural artifact. The exhibition will be open to the public from May 10, 2026, through January 10, 2027.

Scheduled for May 4, 2026, the star-studded fundraiser will be co-chaired by actor Nicole Kidman, tennis icon Venus Williams, fashion leader Anna Wintour, and global music superstar Beyoncé, who is set to attend the gala for the first time in a decade. Tech entrepreneur Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos will serve as honorary chairs, underscoring the event’s high-profile backing from influential figures across entertainment, sports, fashion, and business.

The 2026 gala also marks a transitional moment for Wintour, as it will be her first Met Gala since stepping back from her long-held role as editor in chief of American Vogue. While she has handed day-to-day editorial responsibilities to head of editorial content Chloe Malle, Wintour continues to serve as Vogue’s global editorial director and Condé Nast’s chief content officer, maintaining her influential presence in the fashion world.
