Mob Attack in Assam: Seven Arrested for Assaulting Woman and Police

In a distressing incident in Dima Hasao district of Assam, a mob allegedly assaulted a 38-year-old woman from Nepal, Kamala Dahal, under suspicion of child lifting. The mob further attacked on-duty police personnel who intervened to rescue her. The violence, which occurred on Tuesday evening, resulted in the arrest of seven individuals, including three women, by the local police. The arrested persons are facing multiple charges under the Indian Penal Code, highlighting the severity of their actions.

Superintendent of Police, Mayank Kumar, reported that three police officers sustained injuries during the mob attack, with one of them critically wounded and currently receiving medical treatment at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital. The incident was triggered when Dahal, who was visiting her sister in Haflong, offered chocolates and cash to a child on the street. This act raised suspicions among bystanders, leading to the unfortunate assault.

This incident has brought to light the issue of mob violence in the region, with the Superintendent of Police referencing similar occurrences in the past. The authorities are calling for public vigilance against rumors and a more cautious approach to avoid such violent acts, especially towards individuals who might be vulnerable due to conditions like autism. The community is urged to maintain peace and allow law enforcement to perform their duties without hindrance.
