Telangana Phone Tapping Scandal: BRS Calls for Comprehensive Investigation Amidst Allegations

In a significant development in Telangana’s political landscape, allegations have surfaced accusing officers of the Special Intelligence Bureau (SIB) of illicitly tapping telephones during the tenure of the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) government. In light of these allegations, BRS working president and former minister K T Rama Rao has taken a proactive stance by urging the current Chief Minister, A Revanth Reddy, to initiate a comprehensive investigation into the matter. This request comes amidst claims from opposition parties, including the Congress and BJP, that their communications were subject to unauthorized surveillance.

The controversy has gained momentum with the arrest of three former senior SIB officers and the issuance of look-out circulars against two others, signaling the seriousness of the accusations. In response to these developments, leaders from the ruling Congress party have called for the probe to be widened to include other districts, citing concerns of widespread surveillance activities. The BJP has also highlighted instances of alleged harassment and surveillance, demanding a judicial probe into the matter and raising questions about the involvement of BRS leadership in the Delhi liquor scam.

The Telangana Police have confirmed the registration of the phone tapping case and are seeking custody of the arrested officers for further investigation. With revelations of the possible use of sophisticated surveillance equipment imported through shell companies, the case has attracted significant attention. The investigation’s progress is keenly awaited, as it promises to shed light on the extent of unauthorized surveillance practices and their implications for privacy and political freedoms in the state.
