National Hockey Player Varun Kumar Accused of Rape, FIR Filed in Bengaluru
In a shocking revelation that has stirred the sports community, national hockey player Varun Kumar has been accused of rape by a 22-year-old woman in Bengaluru, Karnataka. According to the police, the complaint alleges that Kumar, a celebrated athlete hailing from Himachal Pradesh but residing in Punjab’s Jalandhar, sexually assaulted her multiple times over the last five years under the pretext of marriage. The woman claims that their acquaintance began on Instagram in 2019 when she was just 17 years old.
The FIR lodged against the hockey player details that the alleged sexual assaults took place during Kumar’s visits to Bengaluru for coaching camps at Sai Stadium. The victim has accused Kumar of exploiting her trust and promises of marriage to coerce her into a physical relationship. The Bengaluru police have registered the case and initiated a search for Kumar, who is currently absconding.
The news comes as stark contrast to the player’s celebrated status, following the Indian Hockey team’s bronze medal win at the Tokyo Olympics, after which the Himachal Pradesh government announced a prize of ₹1 lakh for him. The authorities are now making all efforts to locate Kumar, as the sports world and fans await further developments in this unsettling case.
