Nayanthara vs Dhanush: Copyright Controversy Over Documentary Sparks Industry Debate

A legal dispute between Tamil cinema stars Nayanthara and Dhanush has erupted after the actress used a three-second clip from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan in her Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond The Fairy Tale. Dhanush, the producer of the film, issued a legal notice demanding Rs 10 crore in damages for the unauthorized use of the footage, despite Nayanthara and her husband, director Vignesh Shivan, claiming they had repeatedly sought permission to use the clips. In a scathing open letter, Nayanthara criticized Dhanush for not issuing a No Objection Certificate (NOC) and accused him of inconsistency in his public persona versus his actions.

The conflict has ignited a heated debate within the Tamil film industry. Some industry insiders, such as producer J Satish Kumar, have sided with Nayanthara, suggesting that Dhanush should have granted the NOC for a brief clip, noting that other producers have done the same. Others, however, argue that Dhanush is within his rights as the producer to protect the intellectual property, especially given the film’s significance to both stars. Additionally, some have raised concerns about the couple’s business dealings, with producer SS Kumaran accusing Vignesh Shivan of similarly ignoring copyright claims when it suited his interests.

The case, which is currently pending legal resolution, could have significant implications for the Tamil film industry’s approach to copyright enforcement and the use of behind-the-scenes content. Experts suggest that while Dhanush’s legal stance may hold merit, Nayanthara and Shivan may have a strong case in their defense, given the nature of the footage used. The outcome of this legal clash will likely set a precedent for similar disputes in the future.
