Pantone and Microsoft Unveil AI-Powered Palette Generator for Designers
Global colour authority Pantone has partnered with Microsoft to launch its first AI-driven colour design tool, the Pantone Palette Generator. Integrated within Pantone Connect, this beta feature combines over 60 years of Pantone’s colour research with Microsoft’s Azure OpenAI and AI Foundry technology to help designers create custom palettes using natural language prompts.
The tool enables users to explore, generate, and refine colour palettes in seconds, drawing from Pantone’s extensive colour library. Designers can prompt the AI with queries such as “Show me colours that evoke optimism in Gen Z” or “Build a palette inspired by 1970s fashion editorials”, receiving instant results based on Pantone Color Institute’s proprietary trend data. The system currently supports Pantone’s fashion, home, and interiors library, with plans to expand to the full collection soon.
According to Pantone president Sky Kelley, the collaboration aims to simplify the research and inspiration phase of design by allowing seamless integration of colour and trend data. Microsoft’s Deb Cupp added that the project exemplifies how AI can “unlock new levels of creativity, productivity, and innovation.” The Palette Generator will soon incorporate themes based on the upcoming Pantone Colour of the Year 2026, further deepening its creative potential.
