Political Storm Over Nagpur Clashes as Government, Opposition Trade Blame

Nagpur witnessed violent clashes on Monday evening over demands to relocate Mughal emperor Aurangzeb’s tomb from Maharashtra, leaving over 30 people injured and prompting a curfew in several areas. The violence saw 30 vehicles set ablaze and over 60 rioters taken into custody in the Mahal area. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis termed the incident a “planned attack,” stating that rumors were spread to incite unrest. Deputy CM Eknath Shinde also alleged a conspiracy, emphasizing that attacks on police would not be tolerated.

The Opposition, led by Uddhav Thackeray’s Shiv Sena (UBT), blamed the Mahayuti government—comprising BJP, Shinde-led Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar’s NCP—for failing to maintain law and order. Thackeray demanded the government’s resignation, citing the presence of the RSS headquarters in Nagpur. Congress leader Renuka Chowdhury also raised concerns in the Rajya Sabha, calling the situation a “complete breakdown of communal harmony.” Sena (UBT) leaders accused the government of using historical conflicts to divert attention from economic issues like joblessness and farmer suicides.

As tensions remain high, the Maharashtra government has assured strict action against rioters. The clashes have sparked a heated political debate, with accusations of inciting violence for political gains. The Opposition has alleged that Maharashtra is becoming unattractive for investments due to instability, while the ruling coalition insists on tackling those disturbing communal harmony. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely as the political slugfest continues.
