Punjab CM Announces ₹1 Crore Aid and Govt Job for Family of Farm Protester

In a significant announcement, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday declared financial assistance of ₹1 crore and a government job for the sister of Shubh Karan Singh, a young farm protester who lost his life in Haryana Police action at the Khanauri border. The tragic incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has sparked widespread grief and calls for accountability.

Shubh Karan Singh, aged 21, was a participant in the 2020-21 farm protests and became the first casualty in the recent agitation against the government. His death, reportedly caused by a bullet injury, has intensified the deadlock between the government and the protesting farmers, complicating efforts towards a resolution. The Chief Minister took to X to express the government’s commitment to support the bereaved family, stating, “The Punjab government will provide financial help of ₹1 crore to the family of young farmer Shubh Karan and a government job to his younger sister. We are obeying our duties. Action will be taken against those responsible for the firing.”

In the wake of the incident, farmer leaders have decided to halt their march to Delhi temporarily, demanding justice and support for Singh’s family. The demands include compensation, a government job for the victim’s kin, and legal action against those responsible for the firing. The farmers have also refrained from allowing a post-mortem of Singh’s body, adding to the gravity of the situation. The community’s response underscores the urgent need for dialogue and reconciliation to address the grievances of the agricultural sector.
