Uttarakhand Police Crack Down on NGO Funding Haldwani Violence
In a significant development, the Uttarakhand Police have identified a non-profit organization, Hyderabad Youth Courage NGO, accused of funding the recent violence in Haldwani’s Banbhoolpura area. The violence erupted following the demolition of an ‘illegal’ madrassa and an anti-encroachment drive, prompting the authorities to impose a curfew and issue a shoot-at-site order. The police statement disclosed ongoing investigations into the circulation of a video showing a young man distributing money in the affected area and shared that details regarding the NGO’s financial credentials have been forwarded to the Income Tax Department for further action.
The law enforcement’s stern action includes identifying donors to the implicated NGO and initiating steps to seize its account and registration number. The police have warned against supporting such organizations, emphasizing the gravity of the situation where four people lost their lives and 250 policemen were injured during the clashes. The curfew and drastic measures were necessary to restore order in the aftermath of the violence that saw a police station set ablaze.
To date, the police have arrested 74 individuals in connection with the February 8 violence, including six recent arrests. The authorities continue to urge the public to refrain from endorsing NGOs engaged in illegal activities and contributing to unrest, ensuring that those accepting money illegally or spreading misleading information about the violence on social media will face legal consequences.
