Rahul Gandhi Visits Kin of Hathras Stampede Victims, Calls for Immediate Compensation

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi visited Hathras on Friday to meet the families of the victims of the tragic stampede that occurred on July 2 at a religious congregation. Expressing his condolences, Gandhi emphasized the need for immediate and substantial compensation for the bereaved families, criticizing the lack of adequate arrangements that led to the disaster. The stampede claimed the lives of 121 people, mostly women, due to overcrowding at the event.

During his 30-minute interaction with the victims’ families, Gandhi learned about the inadequate police arrangements and the organizers’ failure to control the crowd. The baba, Narayan Sarkar Hari alias Bhole Baba, who held the congregation, reportedly fled the scene, leaving attendees in peril. Gandhi assured the families he would advocate for compensation and address their grievances with the authorities.

The Uttar Pradesh government has launched a judicial probe into the incident, with six arrests made. Inspector-general Shalabh Mathur mentioned that the baba might be questioned if necessary. Gandhi urged Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to expedite compensation to support the affected families during their time of need, highlighting the importance of timely aid.
