Rekha Gupta Sworn in as Delhi CM in Grand Ceremony at Ramlila Maidan
In a historic political shift, first-time MLA Rekha Gupta was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and NDA Chief Ministers in attendance. The oath was administered by Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena, marking the BJP’s return to power in the capital after 27 years. Alongside Gupta, six MLAs—Parvesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh, and Ravinder Indraj Singh—took oath as Cabinet ministers, reflecting a strategic caste and regional balance.
Rekha Gupta, a 50-year-old lawyer from Haryana’s Jind, has a long-standing association with the RSS-backed Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and previously served as the president of Delhi University Students’ Union. Despite unsuccessful attempts in the 2015 and 2020 Assembly elections, her political career remained strong, earning her the role of BJP Mahila Morcha’s national vice-president. Representing the Baniya community, a key BJP voter base, her rise to the top post signifies the party’s consolidation of traditional support.
Meanwhile, BJP veteran and three-time Rohini MLA Vijender Gupta has been appointed as the Delhi Assembly Speaker, with Mohan Bisht as his deputy. The newly formed Cabinet includes leaders from diverse communities, such as Jats, Sikhs, Brahmins, and Dalits, ensuring broad representation. The portfolio distribution is yet to be announced, but the BJP’s return to power in Delhi signals a significant political realignment in the capital.
