Renowned Economist Bibek Debroy Passes Away at 69, Remembered for His Intellectual Contributions
Bibek Debroy, the esteemed economist and chairman of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Economic Advisory Council, passed away today at the age of 69 due to an intestinal obstruction. A Padma Shri awardee, Debroy’s academic journey began at the Ramakrishna Mission School, Narendrapur, and included studies at Presidency College, Kolkata, the Delhi School of Economics, and Trinity College, Cambridge. He had a distinguished career, serving as chancellor of Pune’s Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), as well as holding notable roles at the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade and as a director on a Ministry of Finance-UNDP legal reforms project.
Prime Minister Modi paid tribute, calling Debroy a “towering scholar” and highlighting his contributions to India’s economic landscape and passion for its ancient texts, which he sought to make accessible to young generations. Modi remarked that Debroy’s vast knowledge of economics, history, politics, and spirituality made him an intellectual figure who left a deep imprint on India’s cultural and policy spheres.
Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan also expressed his condolences, describing Debroy as an “excellent academician” whose economic insights and numerous published works enriched countless lives. Debroy, a member of NITI Aayog until 2019, leaves a lasting legacy in economics, academia, and literature, admired for his significant contributions to India’s development.
