Supreme Court Halts Parliamentary Proceedings in Sandeshkhali Violence Case

In a significant development, the Supreme Court of India has temporarily halted proceedings of a Parliament Committee against senior officials of the West Bengal government, linked to allegations of atrocities in Sandeshkhali. The apex court issued notices to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, West Bengal BJP president Sukanta Majumdar, and the Union Home Ministry, demanding their responses within four weeks. This action comes in the wake of the Privileges Committee’s directive for the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and local authorities to present themselves, following an incident involving Mr. Majumdar and law enforcement.

The case centers on accusations against Trinamool leader Sheikh Sahajan and his associates, who are alleged to have exploited villagers and committed sexual assaults. Despite the arrest of two accomplices, Sahajan remains at large. The situation escalated when Governor CV Ananda Bose relayed complaints from numerous women about harassment and intimidation after he visited the troubled area.

Amidst the controversy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee criticized the BJP for exaggerating the situation, accusing them of inciting further unrest. The case has drawn national attention, with the National Commission for Scheduled Castes recommending the imposition of President’s Rule in the state due to the ongoing violence and political tension.
