Supreme Court Seeks Explanation From Staff For Delay In Listing Cases

On Tuesday, Chief Justice of India UU Lalit requested information from the Supreme Court registry regarding the denial of listing a case that had been prepared for listing for a year and a half. The reason the case has been waiting to be listed for 1.5 years despite being ready was requested by the registry in a notice from the bench of CJI Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi.

After learning that a case listed today was really ready for listing a and a half years prior, the top court gave notice to its own registry and ordered the register to provide an explanation for why the case took so long to list.

The bench writes in its order, “We issue notice to the Registry to file an explanation as to why the matter was not placed before the court for a year and a half despite being ready.” The Registry was instructed to state whether any related cases that had been deemed ready but had not yet been brought before the court.

The top court requested information from the Registry regarding the causes of the crisis and any corrective actions that have been or are being implemented.

“All details of such matters to be furnished along with explanation and if any remedial steps have since been taken, those steps must be adverted to. Let the explanation be filed by Thursday,” the top court bench ordered while posting the matter for hearing on November 3.
