Supreme Court Sets Record in Case Disposal, Clearing Year’s Backlog

The Indian Supreme Court achieved a historic milestone in its pursuit of justice by disposing of a staggering 52,191 cases between January 1 and December 15 of the year 2023. This feat stands as a monumental breakthrough, eclipsing the total number of cases registered this year, which tallied 49,191. This remarkable accomplishment signifies a watershed moment in the nation’s legal history, reflecting the judiciary’s resilience and adaptability in navigating a swiftly evolving landscape.

The spectrum of cases resolved by the apex court this year encompassed a diverse array, with 18,449 criminal matters, 10,348 ordinary civil matters, and 4,410 service matters among those effectively addressed. The court’s proactive approach, coupled with the strategic integration of technology and reforms, contributed significantly to this efficient delivery of justice. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s blueprint for case disposal brought about a paradigm shift in expediting the process, notably reducing the timeframe required for filing to listing.

Moreover, the court’s commitment to equitable justice was underscored by its swift handling of critical matters about human liberty. Notably, during the vacation period from May 22 to July 2, the court listed 2,262 cases involving human liberty, swiftly disposing of 780 such cases. This unprecedented action reflects the court’s unwavering dedication to ensuring timely adjudication, regardless of the nature or complexity of the case at hand. The utilization of technology through the Integrated Case Management Information System (ICMIS) since 2017 has notably facilitated this year’s record disposal, marking the highest number of cases resolved since its implementation.
